Luke 16:13

Luke 16:13 "No servant can be the slave of two masters; such a slave will hate one and love the other or will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

Three points:

1. What are we a slave of?

We are all a slave of something. It may be money, food, work, not working, friends, status, looks, clothes, family, what people think of us, etc. etc.

2. People cannot be a slave of two masters.

So obvious isn't it? Only one thing can be supreme in our lives. Only one thing can have our loyalty. We push comes to shove, there will be only one left.

3. What are we a slave of?

Are we a slave of God? He is tender, loving, kind, protecting, firm, and wise. Jesus said, "Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. For the yoke I will give you is easy, and the load I will put on you is light. (Matthew 11:29-30)"

Haggai 2:20-23

Haggai 2:20-23 The word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, (21) "Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth, (22) and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders. And the horses and their riders shall go down, every one by the sword of his brother. (23) On that day, declares the LORD of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of hosts."

Three points:

1. Judgment:

A time for humility. Throw away our pride. We aren't as big and powerful as we think. Maybe we can't solve our problems ourselves. We need someone who is wiser, stronger, and able to know the future.

2. Blessing:

God is the one who blesses.

3. Picked out:

God chooses his servants conditionally to those who heart is right with Him. Is my heart right with Him? Am I thankful for what He has done and doing?

Haggai 2:10-19

Haggai 2:10-19 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, (11) "Thus says the LORD of hosts: Ask the priests about the law: (12) 'If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment and touches with his fold bread or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food, does it become holy?'" The priests answered and said, "No." (13) Then Haggai said, "If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?" The priests answered and said, "It does become unclean." (14) Then Haggai answered and said, "So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the LORD, and so with every work of their hands. And what they offer there is unclean. (15) Now then, consider from this day onward. Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the LORD, (16) how did you fare? When one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty. (17) I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares the LORD. (18) Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid, consider: (19) Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you."

Three points:

1. God gives a question for the experts: God tests us; any good teacher does.

God tests us, too. What have we learned? What have we learned from this passage? How can we apply it to our life?

2. Explanation: What is clean and acceptable and what isn't.

Are there things I am doing, thinking, and saying that God considers unclean?
Proverbs 26:23-28 Insincere talk that hides what you are really thinking is like a fine glaze on a cheap clay pot. (24) A hypocrite hides hate behind flattering words. (25) They may sound fine, but don't believe him, because his heart is filled to the brim with hate. (26) He may disguise his hatred, but everyone will see the evil things he does. (27) People who set traps for others get caught themselves. People who start landslides get crushed. (28) You have to hate someone to want to hurt him with lies. Insincere talk brings nothing but ruin.

3. Examine: What are your blessings since you have obeyed?

When was the last time we obeyed the rules in the New Testament that the Lord Jesus gave us? Consider:
Romans 13:13-14 Let us conduct ourselves properly, as people who live in the light of day---no orgies or drunkenness, no immorality or indecency, no fighting or jealousy. (14) But take up the weapons of the Lord Jesus Christ, and stop paying attention to your sinful nature and satisfying its desires.

Haggai 2:6-8

Haggai 2:6-8 For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. (7) And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts. (8) The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts.

Three points:

1. A promise: Shake. A shaking, judgment. What will stand? What will remain?

Our house may be gone, our money gone, our family gone, our health gone, but what will happen to our heart? Is it still solid for Jesus Christ, the Scriptures, and what it teaches? A true test of faith is often something unpleasant.

2. Ownership: God owns it all.

On the bottom line doesn't God own everything? We need to work, but isn't our family more important? Our family is important, but isn't God, himself, for important? What are our priorities?

3. Greater than former and "I will give peace."

Only God can give peace. It will not be found in a man, an institution, or a philosophy. Once a person is at peace with God, they will find the direction for peace with others. Until we realize that we are not at peace with God-we have broken His laws--we will not ask for mercy--crying out, "Lord Jesus have mercy on me, forgive my sins"--then we will be at peace with God.

Haggai 2:1-5

Haggai 2:1-5 In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, (2) "Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, (3) 'Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? (4) Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts, (5) according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not.

Three points:

1. Remember: What it was like.

Sometimes when we look back in our lives, we think "Everything was good; what went wrong"? In turning to the Lord Jesus to help, he can take the most terrible situation and turn into something beautiful.

2. Encouragement: Again; do we encourage one another?

I need to be encouraged sometimes. It is a blessing when someone comes up to me and says, "I'm praying for you." Are we mindful of others, praying for them, and helping them?

3. Fear: It is common. There IS a reason not to fear--I am with you.

Everyone has fear sometimes. If things are bad and continue day after day, we are to be encouraged; God says, "Fear not". God is in control. The Lord Jesus suffered, Job suffered, others have suffered, but after wards there was a blessing. We shouldn't give up.

Haggai 1:8-15

Haggai 1:8-15 Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD. (9) You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house. (10) Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce. (11) And I have called for a drought on the land and the hills, on the grain, the new wine, the oil, on what the ground brings forth, on man and beast, and on all their labors." (12) Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him. And the people feared the LORD. (13) Then Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, spoke to the people with the LORD's message, "I am with you, declares the LORD." (14) And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and worked on the house of the LORD of hosts, their God, (15) on the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

Three points:

1. Examine: "Look around you."

Examine your life, your situation, and your environment. What do you see--blessings or none? God made us to think; He wants us to think now.

2. Obeyed: "Yes, Lord; your will be done."

Finally, it must come down to this--your will O, God or mine.

3. Encouragement: This is an example of exhortation.

"I am with you." This happens with obedience. We are not perfect, sinless; we can be blameless. We can ask for help and confess that our way is not always His.

Haggai 1:1-7

Haggai 1:1-7 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest: (2) "Thus says the LORD of hosts: These people say the time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD." (3) Then the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet, (4) "Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins? (5) Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. (6) You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes. (7) "Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.

Three points:

1. Excuses: "Not yet."

Are we making excuses, when we need to get moving? Are we seeking our own comfort, when we should be seeking God's best? There are things more important than ourselves.

2. Questions: "Is it time...?"

God likes to ask questions. We are not robots--mindless and impersonal; we are created individuals with a free will. Let us come together and reason.

3. Statement: "Consider your ways"

That is what are your priorities, way of life? Is it nothing but myself? We need to see life from God's perspective.

1 Corinthians 9:25

1 Corinthians 9:25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.

Three points:

1. Life is a race

Every day, every situation brings us to a task, just as an athlete faces. There is a start, action, and a finish.

2. Self-control

Self-control is living these situations under restraint. It is NOT acting impulsively; it is not just living by emotions (though they play a part). It is waiting a little time after a flash of anger before responding. It is thinking through a situation before condemning someone, maybe there is a explanation for what we see happening.

3. Reward

There are immediate benefits. It may save your computer, as in the image. It may save a friendship, a marriage, a good employee, or a good job. We need to pray for God's help, because He knows the whole situation. He will give wisdom.

Psalm 34:18

Psalms 147:3 He heals the broken-hearted and bandages their wounds.

Three points:

1. He

Not the physician, not your friend, not your neighbor, not your family, not you, but Jesus Christ.

Psalms 34:18 The LORD is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope.

2. Broken-hearted

Who hasn't had their heart broken. Sorrow, discouragement, even despondency are a part of this life.

3.Heals and bandages

Any good physician or nurse can do bandaging, but they can't heal. The body can heal with the help of medical professionals, but only the Lord Jesus can heal the heart. Ask Him to help today. It may take time to heal, but He can heal. I personally know He can.

Psalm 4:8

Psalms 4:8 I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; For You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.

Three points

1. Lie down

Lie down to sleep that is. We need sleep. Sleep deprivation is overwhelming much of today's populace, but no matter eventually we all lie down to sleep.

2. In peace and safety

Peaceful sleep; safe sleep. Many cannot sleep with peace--bitterness, an unforgiving attitude, guilt, pain, and fear are some things that prevent sleep. These things can be corrected. Bitterness can be gone with forgiving the offender; they will either repent or be punished by God.

3. You alone

Even in the midst of fear and pain, the Lord Jesus is with the Christian. He alone can give this type of peace.

Psalm 47:7

For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding. (Psalms 47:7)

Three points:

1. God is King

There are all too many control freaks, but isn't it true that we all want to run our own life? There is only one King, and that King is Jesus Christ.

2. Sing praises

Praise is saying thank you, recognizing one's authority and power, and showing in words and song that God is this King. Do we sing with meaning and truthfulness?

3. With understanding

Not in a trance, not in "The Silence", but with our full mind, fully alert and attentive. Are we praising the Lord Jesus for all He has done?

2 Chronicles 7:14

if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)

Three points:

1. Times are getting rough.

For those of us who realize we have broken God's laws, have faith in Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness, and believe the Bible are facing subtle pressure from many. How long will it be until we have to suffer as many Bible believing Christians do around the world?

2. Changing the heart is effective.

Turning over a new leaf, trying to change our ways, changing government, etc does not produce a lasting change.

3. What is needed for revival.

a. Humble themselves (The idea that I cannot but God can.)
b. Pray (Talking to God.)
c. Seek God (What do you want me to do here; it is closely related to prayer. It is not the silence.)
d. Turn from their wicked ways.
(This is a very important point. Breaking the Ten Commandments by "Christians" is as common or even more common than unbelievers. We need to live like Jesus wants us to live.)

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous; don't be terrified or afraid of them. For it is the LORD your God who goes with you; He will not leave you or forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:6)

Three points:

1. Our condition

Fear, dismay, anxiety, uncertainty? Financial, emotional, physical, spiritually?

2. His counsel

"Don't be afraid; don't be terrified." Regardless of the difficulty, God is there. God is with His people. Many testimonies over the centuries attest to it.

3. His promise

God will go with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. We truly can be victorious.

Ephesians 5:2

And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. (Ephesians 5:2)

Three points:

1. Walk in love

From the moment we wake up, until the time we go to sleep, we must show love to all. Treating all we meet exactly the same with gentleness and kindness is walking in love.

Love sometimes must be uncomfortable. It may mean an honest appraisal and correction of another. It is also receiving the same from someone else.

2. Jesus Christ

He is our example. He healed the unlovely, yet he spoke against sin. Both were to bring healing of their souls, forgiveness of sins, and a right relation with himself.

3. He pleased his father

So should we. The next few verses give some examples of actions that do NOT walk in love. Sin always hurts.

John 8:36

Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. (John 8:36)

Three points:

1. Free

O how people desire to be free. We have escaped like a bird from a hunter's trap; the trap is broken, and we are free! (Psalms 124:7).

2. How are we freed?

The Son. This is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me To preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed; (Luke 4:18).

3. True Freedom

Some think that if there were no laws, there would be real freedom, but this is false. First, there is no real freedom from law. There is physical laws and chemical laws. Second, without law there is chaos.
In their hearts they say, "Nothing can hurt us! We'll always be happy and free from trouble." (Psalms 10:6)

True freedom comes from obeying the perfect laws of the perfect lawgiver--Jesus Christ! I will live in perfect freedom, because I try to obey your teachings. (Psalms 119:45).

1 Corinthians 6:11

And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
(1 Corinthians 6:11)

Three points:

1. Some of you

All of us have broken God's laws. Isaiah says that "all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6). The absolute best we do is not good enough.

2. Washed, Sanctified, and Justified

Washed means fully washed, totally clean, no spots, no stains, so fully that it is like brand new.

Sanctified means made holy, that is, fit to be used by God. A king would not use bent, beat-up, dirty plates and cups; he would use the best, the most perfect and clean. This is how God views those who have repented, confessed our sins, and have faith in Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness.

Justified means considered innocent. We are not innocent, but after faith God considers us to be fully, completely, wholly innocent; it is as if we never sinned or broken God's laws.

3. Lord Jesus Christ

We cannot do this, a psychiatrist cannot, a surgeon cannot, no one can--only God. The Lord Jesus suffered for out sins; He is the perfect sacrifice. The Holy Spirit opened our eyes to our condition and moved us to repentance.

Rejoice! Our sins are forgiven so completely that there is no reason to think of them again. That is easier said then done, but we can remind ourselves and believe that it is finished.

John 10:10

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (John 10:10)

Three points:

1. The thief

Someone we don't want to meet. He does the exact opposite of what God wants. He is usually up to three things: stealing, killing, and destroying. He cares for nothing except to get what she/he wants. If something or someone gets in the way, to bad. Have we ever stolen anything?

2. The Lord Jesus

He does the opposite; he comes to give, give life, and give restoration. He gives forgiveness, a relationship with him, love, peace, and many other things. Are we living as the Lord Jesus wants us or as we want?

3. Us

This world is full of sorrows. We cannot prevent it, but living like Jesus wants us will make a difference to us and others. We are influencing people in one way or other. May God help us to do what is right.

Mark 11:18

And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. Mark 11:18

Three points:

1. Heard and seek to destroy

The Lord Jesus had ridden into Jerusalem with the cheers of many people; he had also gone into the Temple to throw out the crooks, cheats, hucksters from it--just as we should today. The religious authorities were not pleased. They didn't like what the Lord Jesus was saying and doing, so the solution? Let's kill him. Speaking and living the truth sometimes will make enemies from very powerful people. They may seek our death, too, but we must still speak and live the truth.

2. They feared him.

Strange, why did they were they afraid of him? They knew He was speaking the truth that they were afraid to admit; they also knew He was living the truth. Despite knowing these things, they still chose to do evil and oppose the truth. They were afraid, too, of the crowd who at that point were shocked, amazed, and challenged by His teaching. What kind of teacher are we--like the religious leaders or like the Lord Jesus? Do we have the trash of the world in us? Matthew Henry points out that maybe they were afraid that He would throw them out, too; they were a living lie.

3. Astonished

Why the shock? They were simply blown away. They had not expected this. They expected an earthly kingdom, an earthly king, a messiah who would provide for all their needs, provide safety, and throw out the foreign rulers. The Lord Jesus came to reform their lives, to drive sin out, to promote holiness and holy living. Are we in shock when we read the Bible? Are we more interested in comfort or truth? Are we putting ourselves first or God? Are we treating others without bias and mistreatment?

Psalm 25:5

Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. (Psalms 25:5)

Three points:

1. Lead

The word for lead here is usually translated tread (in KJV). It has the idea of "cause me to walk". The idea here is "Lord, I don't know enough and not strong enough, so I need you to guide me to walk down the path of truth."

Are we too smart to ask God for help, or are we wise enough to ask Him?

2. Teach

We don't know all the facets of an issue. We are limited in many ways. How often I have made a decision but later found out I didn't know enough. If I had known, I would have decided differently. We need God's help.

3. Wait

To wait 10 minutes is usually too long, how about all day.? Why does God have us waiting? I think it is because some details have to be worked out in our environment before our prayer can be answered. I may want a piece of pie now, but if I wait for it to bake, it will be worth it.

Matthew 18:22

For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Matthew 18:22

Three points:

1. Two or Three

A small crowd for sure. We shouldn't think that we need big numbers of people for God to hear our prayer, worship, or fellowship. As times get harder this may be the size of the local gathering of believers. The Lord Jesus doesn't want numbers, necessarily, but does want our heart--100% of us.

2. In my name

Not in any other name. Jesus doesn't have two, three, or a hundred names. There is only one under heaven whereby we can be saved. If we are gathering for ourselves, it is shallow. If we gather for a great speaker--and that is all--it is deceitful. If we gather for the Lord Jesus--to remember Him, worship Him, thank Him, pray to Him, that is what is right.

3. I am there

We won't sense it, hear it, see it, but He is there. How? Because He said so. The Christian life is one of faith, not sight. We have the witnesses from the first century--the Apostles and others. What a comfort to know that when we gather, He IS there.

Matthew 28:20

And I will be with you always, to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20

Three thoughts:

1. I will

A word of confidence and joy. Do we believe it? How many have the confidence and ability to say this? No politician can say that. No religious leader can say that. No evolutionist can say that. They can say, but they can't follow through.

2. ...be with you always

Often we feel alone, even when surrounded by people. Sometimes we are all alone in the darkness of our mind, our soul suffering from heart break or sorrow. The Lord Jesus is with us. Doesn't a verse come to mind? In the deepest sorrows I've felt, God was there to help me.

3. ...to the end of the world.

He never leaves. No matter what happens even if the end of the world. The word is sometimes translated "age", but there is no indication that he would only be with His people only while He was alive or the nation existed. Be assured, He will be with us and not leave us. We are not abandoned.

Ecclesiastes 7:1

1 A good reputation is better than expensive perfume; and the day you die is better than the day you are born. Ecclesiastes 7:1

Three points:

1. Expensive perfume

According to the Guinnes World Record, the world's most expensive perfume is Clive Christian No. 1.

It is believed to be made of some of rarest ingredients in the world. No expense was spared.

For only $2,350 you can buy 30ml of it. There are only 1000 bottles made every year.

Even from this perfume, the most expensive was the Clive Christian perfume No. 1 in a Imperial Majesty bottle made from Baccarat Crystal with a white diamond inset. Only 10 bottles were made. The price? Only $200,000 (another source said $215,000).

2. Good reputation is better

There is no price for a good reputation. A reputation of dependability, honesty, fairness, and initiative. The Lord Jesus is the perfect example.

3. Dying is better than being born

For the Christian dying means going to heaven. It is going to our real home, our real country, an eternal home. We are full of courage and would much prefer to leave our home in the body and be at home with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8)

1 Peter 5:8

Be alert, be on watch! Your enemy, the Devil, roams around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8)

Three points:

1. Be alert

Eyes wide open, ears focused, mind with full attention to the possibility of attack. The devil is sneaky, tricky, deceitful; he will come wearing the clothes of righteousness. He will sound comforting, loving, pleasant, and safe. We need to be aware of these things. We need to have a standard; we do--the Bible.

2. A roaring lion

Everything seems safe. There is nothing to indicate danger--no sounds, no smells, no movement. We feel it is safe to advance. Suddenly, the pounce! The kill. It is all over. When we hear the roar in the distance, believe he is coming.

3. Devour

To ruin, to destroy. King David was with Uriah; David had him killed after sinning with Uriah's wife. The testimony is this: "You have given the enemies of God an opportunity to blaspheme Him."

Where then is safety? The Bible is the Book of Truth. Prayer is the voice of seeking help. The Holy Spirit is able to keep us from falling. Let us be alert, pray, study, be alert, and pray for each other.

Psalm 99:1

THE LORD reigns; Let the peoples tremble! He dwells [between] the cherubim; Let the earth be moved! Psalm 99:1

Three points:

1. Who reigns?

Money? Greed? Self? In many ways it seems so doesn't it, but the ultimate King of kings is the Lord. Today is our day of decision. God allows us this freedom to choose life or death.

2. Trembles

Some day there will our judgment. Do we fear God in love and run to Him for mercy, or do we fear God and hide. Adam in the Garden of Eden choose to hide. King David when confronted with his sin, asked for mercy. How precious, O God, is your constant love! We find protection under the shadow of your wings. (Psalms 36:7) You will be merciful to us once again. You will trample our sins underfoot and send them to the bottom of the sea! (Micah 7:19)

3. Dwells [between] the cherubim

All kings would like to have such glory and prestige. Yet, He with such power and authority, is tender to heal the unlovely. When Jesus came to the territory of Gadara on the other side of the lake, he was met by two men who came out of the burial caves there. These men had demons in them and were so fierce that no one dared travel on that road. (Matthew 8:28)

Hebrews 13:5

Let your conversation be without covetousness: and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 13:5

Three points:

1. Conversation

This is an old word for lifestyle and worldview. Covetousness is wanting what someone else has--the old keeping up with the Jones. Greed and covetousness has ruined many people, not only the person with the covetousness but those affected by it. This life is filled with self seekers instead of God seekers. We need to be helping others, too.

2. Contentment

It is to be happy with what I have. All too often I catch myself thinking, "If I only had ____, then things would be better." We should be content with our work and calling, our wages, and what we have.

3. God with us

"I will never leave you, nor forsake you." It is a fear of many that their loved ones will leave them, a spouse, friend, parents, or children. We must remember that the Lord Jesus has promised that He will NOT leave us. Let us be happy during the day and sleep well at night knowing He is with us.

Job 42:10

And the LORD restored Job’s losses when he prayed for his friends. Job 42:10

Three points:

1. Job

Job had gone a lot of suffering: loss of wealth, loss of children, his wife practically disowned him, and his friends (?) harshly and falsely criticized him. Time for revenge, right?

2. Job prayed

Many would think he should pray, "Lord, punish those jerks," but Job did NOT. He prayed FOR them. How do we pray for those who react against us, use us, or hurt us? We need to pray for them, for them to repent, for them be restored from shame, guilt, and sorrow, for them to be happy and at peace with the Lord Jesus.

3. Restored

Job was blessed after he prayed FOR his enemies and false accusers. What better to not have enemies than to be kind to them and pray for them. Even if anyone still treats you badly, you have done what was right.

2 Corinthians 12:9

And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
(2 Corinthians 12:9)

Three points:

1. Paul plead with God

A "messenger of Satan" was bothering Paul. Why would God allow such a thing? Paul asked God to remove it, but God did not. Of the Lord Jesus it is written: Heb 5:8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.

Sometimes the suffering we have has a purpose.

2. God's strength, Paul's weakness

Paul may have thought, "I just can't make it; I just can't go on." Have you thought that way? I'm sure we all have, but God somehow gives us the strength to go on. This way we KNOW that it was the Lord that made us successful and not ourselves.

3. God's power

God's power is better than ours. Pray, wait (if need be), trust, and He will come through. Psalm 27:14 Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!

Psalm 34:4

I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. Psalm 34:4

Three points:

1. Sought

I don't hunt, but I like to track animals. It is a challenge to go into the woods or fields, find some deer tracks, and follow them. Sometimes there is only a few scattered sticks or some scat; it is hard; it is seeking. Do we seek God with such diligence?

2. Heard

When God has "heard" us, He will answer us according to His will. He always knows what we say but to "hear" means pay attention. May God "hear" our prayers.

3. Delivered

Delivered means to snatch out of the hand of the enemy or a difficult situation. What joy to be delivered! We pray; He delivers. Let us turn to the Lord Jesus first of all when we need deliverance.

1 Corinthians 15:41

The sun has its own beauty, the moon another beauty, and the stars a different beauty; and even among stars there are different kinds of beauty.
(1 Corinthians 15:41)

Three points:

1. Sun

The sun's beauty is without question. This has been especially true since pictures has been taken in astromony.

2. Moon and stars

This is a supersatured image from and shows the beauty of the moon.

3. My wife and I were walking this morning. The fog was fairly thick and we could make out things about 50 yards away. Yet looking up we could see the moon and the stars clearly. The moonshadow were bright. Things may be difficult in life. What we can see is only a short distance, but things look very differently looking up. We are to keep our eyes on the Lord Jesus.

We must keep our eyes on Jesus, who leads us and makes our faith complete. He endured the shame of being nailed to a cross, because he knew that later on he would be glad he did. Now he is seated at the right side of God's throne! (Hebrews 12:2)

Philemon 1:7

For we have great joy and consolation in your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed by you, brother. (Philemon 1:7)

Three points:

1. Great Joy

This didn't come from something they did; it came from something that someone else did. This someone, Philemon, was going out of his way to help others. The help he was giving was to refresh the heart of other believers. Joy is the heart-felt emotion of pleasure, satisfaction, sweetness. Joy can be felt in giving as well as receiving. Showing loving kindness to others and seeing that they are comforted. Truly, the Lord Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive."

2. Consolation

Consolation here is comfort and encourage. "Come on brother; come on sister, you can do it. Keep going. Keep the faith. Let's pray together. Need help to finish the joy, then let me help you." Are we doing this?

3. Refresh

The help he was giving was to refresh the heart of other believers. Refresh is the same idea of taking a nap or the refreshment that comes from a good night's sleep. Our hearts grow weary from the things we face; we need others who will minister to us refreshment--an encouraging, comforting word. Let's start today.

Titus 3:7

...that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:7)

Three points:

1. Justified by His grace

We do not deserve or have any right to be justified--being viewed by God as never have sinned. It is not by our works, but it is logical.
His grace is receiving what we don't deserve.

2. Become heirs

Jesus is the Son of God. He has chosen for us to receive part of His inheritance. Talk about not being selfish.

3. Hope of eternal life

This is not living in this sin cursed world with sickness and suffering; it is living in heaven.

All of this will happen, because Jesus Christ suffered for our sins, and we have confessed our sins, believed and asked Him to forgive us.

Revelation 1:5

Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood. Revelation 1:5

Three points:

1. He loved us

Past tense, so He loved us from before we existed.

2. We are cleansed

If we--realizing we have disobeyed the holy God's law--pray to the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of sins, then we are cleansed from our sins.

3. It cost something

God didn't just say, "O, forget it", when He forgive sins; He suffered death on the cross. Let us be thankful.

Psalms 130:1-2

A Song of Ascents. Out of the depths I have cried to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive To the voice of my supplications. (Psalms 130:1-2)

Three points:

1. His plea

The depths refer to a sea of troubles and despair and refer to sorrow and emotional pain.

This reminds me of Jonah, who was literally in the depths.
Jonah 2:2-4
(2) "In my distress, O LORD, I called to you, and you answered me. From deep in the world of the dead I cried for help, and you heard me.
(3) You threw me down into the depths, to the very bottom of the sea, where the waters were all around me, and all your mighty waves rolled over me.
(4) I thought I had been banished from your presence and would never see your holy Temple again.

But didn't the Lord Jesus experience this as well?

Hebrews 5:7-8
(7) In his life on earth Jesus made his prayers and requests with loud cries and tears to God, who could save him from death. Because he was humble and devoted, God heard him.
(8) But even though he was God's Son, he learned through his sufferings to be obedient.

Sometimes God allows us to go through hard times; sometimes we get ourselves there.

This is the time to especially pray.

Some grow bitter in times and situations like this, but we know better, for it is THE time to pray.

2. He speaks to the one, true God.

God always knows; the word "heard" means "responds to favorably"

He is saying, "Please listen to me and grant me my request, i. e. please do as I ask."
Psalms 55:2
(2) Listen to me and answer me; I am worn out by my worries.

3. God is ready and willing to listen to us.

Let us pray.

Isaiah 51:12

I, even I, am he who comforts you: who are you, that you are afraid of man who shall die, and of the son of man who shall be made as grass. (Isaiah 51:12)

Three points:

1. Comforts

Life can be rough. How are you doing? What do you do when you need some comfort? The Lord Jesus is the only one who can comfort.

2. Fear

Fear is fact of life. Who can be afraid when total protection is by your side?

3. Man and God

Man dies; God does not. Who better to believe and trust than God. Life may not be easy; there may come the time when we say, "I can't live those this". The Lord Jesus will be our comforter.

Psalms 91:4-5

"He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor the arrow that flieth by day." (Psalm 91:4-5

Three points:

1. Hens are protective of their chicks

We have about 25 hens. If it is raining, the peeps hide under her wings--safe and dry. She always gives her best to protect them. God does the same for us--if we are willing.

2. We need to have faith

Saying we trust God is easy; when things are tough, it is then we are seen what we really are--trust God or something/somebody else.

3. Fear

God may send/allow hard times, but we can be assured that He is in control. We are safe. Our souls cannot be destroyed by man or situation.

1 Peter 3:15-16

But have reverence for Christ in your hearts, and honor him as Lord. Be ready at all times to answer anyone who asks you to explain the hope you have in you, but do it with gentleness and respect. Keep your conscience clear, so that when you are insulted, those who speak evil of your good conduct as followers of Christ will become ashamed of what they say. (1 Peter 3:15-16)

Three points:

1. Be ready

We are not Christians because we grew up in a Christian home; we are not Christians because we live in the USA; we are not Christians because we prayed some kind of prayer. We are Christians because we have understood that we are disobedient sinners who deserve the wrath of God and in faith have asked Him to forgive us. We have faith in Jesus Christ alone. Faith alone saves us. We must be ready to give a reasonable answer to those who are not Christians.

2. Gentleness and respect

No in-your-face attitudes here, but calmly explaining what we believe. Do you know what Christians believe? If not, research it out. There are a number of sites as Apologetics Press to help you out.

3. Keep you conscious clear

Live the kind of life that Jesus wants us to live.

Hebrews 11:7

It was faith that made Noah hear God's warnings about things in the future that he could not see. He obeyed God and built a boat in which he and his family were saved. As a result, the world was condemned, and Noah received from God the righteousness that comes by faith. (Hebrews 11:7)

Three points:

1. Faith

Faith is believing God. Faith isn't a mindless unknowing. There may be solid evidence or a reasonableness for what we believe, thus the role of apologetics.

2. Obey

To obey is to do what God says. There are over 1,000 rules that are given us in the New Testament. Here is a short example:

Love must be completely sincere. Hate what is evil, hold on to what is good. Love one another warmly as Christians, and be eager to show respect for one another. Work hard and do not be lazy. Serve the Lord with a heart full of devotion. Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles, and pray at all times. Share your belongings with your needy fellow Christians, and open your homes to strangers. Ask God to bless those who persecute you---yes, ask him to bless, not to curse. Be happy with those who are happy, weep with those who weep. Have the same concern for everyone. Do not be proud, but accept humble duties. Do not think of yourselves as wise. If someone has done you wrong, do not repay him with a wrong. Try to do what everyone considers to be good. Do everything possible on your part to live in peace with everybody. Never take revenge, my friends, but instead let God's anger do it. For the scripture says, "I will take revenge, I will pay back, says the Lord." Instead, as the scripture says: "If your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them a drink; for by doing this you will make them burn with shame." Do not let evil defeat you; instead, conquer evil with good. (Romans 12:9-21)

3. Righteousness comes from faith

It is not our works, but our faith. Noah had faith and shows us what faith means. He believed God and did what God said. Wondering about salvation? See The Good Test.

2 Timothy 2:4

A soldier on active duty wants to please his commanding officer and so does not get mixed up in the affairs of civilian life. (2 Timothy 2:4)

Three points:

1. We Christians are soldiers.

The battle is NOT physical; it IS spiritual. The Devil continuously fights us with temptation. He does this by sorrows, troubles, sickness, discouragement, verbal abuse from some non-christians. He never quits; we can never be discharged from battle. We may desert, but never are we discharged.

2. We want to please.

We want to please our commanding officer, the Lord Jesus. If not, why not? Too many today do not want to please the Lord Jesus. Things in this life have distracted us. Sin looks too attractive. God helps us. We need repentance.

3. Civilian life

Civilian life here is living like the world, instead of the way the Lord Jesus wants us to live. We look to the world to get our clue on how to dress, act, marry, raise our children. Why are there so many Christian divorces? Why is there little, if any, difference between Christian and non-christian? It is because we are mixed up in the civilian life. The Devil has beat us. Let us plead to the Lord Jesus for help; let us forsake our sins; let us ask forgiveness, and let us repent. God will help us.

Psalms 15:1

LORD, who may enter your Temple? Who may worship on Zion, your sacred hill?
(Psalms 15:1)

Three points:

1. Lord

Who is he talking about? Lord implies someone with authority; it also implies--from the way it is used here--someone to whom I submit. This Psalmist is someone who has submitted to God. Is He your Lord?

2. Who may enter your Temple?

Note the word "your". Entering voluntarily to worship the Lord. There is also desire, a willingness, and ability. We have all this. Are we eager to enter His Temple and worship Him, or is something holding us back like sin or pride?

3. Who may worship?

Is there some qualification? Is there some requirements? Surely there is. The rest of the Psalm deals with that. We need to have our beliefs and actions in line with Gods.

Isaiah 61:10

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. (Isaiah 61:10)

Three points:

1. There is great reason to be happy

People like to be happy. There is no greater happiness of being thankful to God than knowing the forgiveness of sins.

2. Garments of salvation

After Adam and Eve sinned (disobeyed God's law), they clothed themselves in fig leaves. After repentance, God clothed them with the garments of salvation--lamb skins.

3. We are like Adam and Eve

We sin (disobey) against God, too. With our repentance, God clothes us with salvation. Our sins are forgiven. Any true Christian understands; the weight, burden, of sin and guilt is gone. It is time to rejoice. Let us be thankful and rejoice today.

Galatians 1:9

We have said it before, and now I say it again: if anyone preaches to you a gospel that is different from the one you accepted, may he be condemned to hell! (Galatians 1:9)

Three points:

1. What the is Gospel?

If you're not sure take the Good Person Test. In summary: we have broken God's law. We are liars, thieves, blasphemer, adulterers, and coveters. This type of person must be punished. God's punishment is hell. The Lord Jesus Christ died for sins; he paid the punishment. Now we must repent, call on Him to forgive our sins, trusting Him, and giving Him the right place in our lives.

2. Any other gospel is wrong.

The gospel of good works, intellectual assent, or "You need an experience with God" will all fail. Any other gospel spoken by someone is condemned, along with that person.

3. Know the true gospel and preach that.

Let's not fool ourselves by doing anything else.

Exodus 23:8

Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe makes people blind to what is right and ruins the cause of those who are innocent. (Exodus 23:8)

Three points:

1. Bribe

A bribe is anything that will appeal to our lusts. We desire money, career advancement, favors, etc, so "here take this, and help me out." We are only fooling ourselves to allow this.

2. Bribes blind us

A bribe will cause us to close our eyes to truth and making proper judgments. Someone buys what they want from a person in authority.

3. Bribes ruin the innocent

Accepting a bribe means a good decision is not made. It is prejudiced. Thank God His decisions are always right. Let us be prepared to go what is right. Doing what is right is in the Bible.

James 5:7-8

Therefore be patient, brethren, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, waiting patiently for it until it receives the early and latter rain. You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. (James 5:7-8)

Three points:

1. Be patient

Patience is waiting with contentment. We can't be frustrated, whinny, or manipulative. The waiting may be long or short.

2. The farmer

An example is given to us of a farmer. A farmer plants and must wait for the harvest. There is no way to speed up or slow it down. This type of patience is what we need.

3. The Lord Jesus will return

It is hard to wait for our Lord to return for us and straighten out the mess in this world. We must establish our hearts, that is, make up our mind, our emotions, desires, and passion, for He will come, but we must wait. This is faith: the Lord Jesus said that he would come, and He will come.

Romans 12:16

Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. (Romans 12:16)

Three points:

1. Have an honest opinion about yourself.

We shouldn't think that we're better than someone else or worse than someone else. If we are, we should be humble about it.

2. Don't be a so-called name dropper.

We shouldn't try to be friends with the famous just so we can say, "Yea, so and so is a friend of mine." It is a type of pride.

3. Realize our opinion may not be the best.

We can give our views, but we need to be aware that others may have a better or worse opinion. Listen, then speak. It doesn't mean we have to give up our opinion but to listen and realize ours may not be the best. Truth is the criteria, not science. The Bible is better than science. Truth and facts don't change; science does.

Revelation 12:11

And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. (Revelation 12:11)

Three points:

1. They overcame.

What did they overcome? They overcame the Devil, Satan, the adversary.

2. How did they overcome?

They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb. We cannot overcome Satan without God's help. He is simply too strong. But with the blood of the Lamb, there is no difficulty. They also overcame him by the word of their testimony. They did not deny the Lord Jesus when things got tough. They were faithful. They prayed. They were content to wait until God delivered them.

3. They didn't make their life top priority.

They loved something, someone, more than themselves. How much do we love the Lord Jesus? Are we willing to follow, even if we might have to die because of it? He suffered and died. We might have to also.

Psalms 111:4

He has made His wonderful works to be remembered; The Lord is gracious and full of compassion. (Psalms 111:4)

Three points:

1. God doesn't do anything without reason.

His creation, His dealings with people, His promises are all wonderful works to be remembered. Memorizing has its blessings. Look around you, take a break and be outside, see all that God has done. It is through the intricate detail and design that we are aware of His creative genius.

2. The Lord is gracious.

Grace is receiving what we don't deserve. Consider everything that you and I have. We do not deserve it. It is a blessing and gift from God. Even the hard things in life, God turns around to be a blessing.

3. The Lord is full of compassion.

Some make him out to be a tyrant, but He is not. Remember how Jesus had compassion on the multitude and fed them, how He healed the sick, and how he dealt with His enemies. But the day is coming when we die as it is appointed and after that the judgment.

Job 34:29

When He gives quietness, who then can make trouble? And when He hides His face, who then can see Him, Whether it is against a nation or a man alone?-- (Job 34:29)

Three points:

1. God is sovereign.

He can do what He wants, when He wants, and how He wants. No one can stop Him.

2. God gives peace.

If God gives peace, there will be peace--whether it is an individual or a nation. It is conditional. The person or nation must meet His conditions. The person must repent, confess their sins, and by trusting in the Lord Jesus call on His name, "God, be merciful to me, a sinner."

3. God is not found by our examination.

No matter how we look, test, examine, search, or seek, He will not be found, if He wishes to be hidden. But the Lord Jesus has come, and He can be found by those who seek Him. We who are Christians can truly rejoice!

Genesis 22:8

And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. (Genesis 22:8)

Three points:

1. Sometimes the godly life is tested.

Are we really a Christian? What better way to prove it then to test it. Abraham was tested, the Lord Jesus was tested, and all the saints from the first until now. A friend of mine has had a non-healing fracture of his leg. This has gone on for months. He cannot work, he cannot walk, he cannot do much of anything except sit. How is his faith? Strong.

2. Abraham believed God would take care of the problem.

Shouldn't we have the same attitude? Pray, then wait for the answer. It may be, "No" or "Yes". We don't know how God will answer, but He will.

3. They continued walking.

While waiting we still must go on living. No sloughing now; it is time to live. Keep the faith. Pray and wait. God values waiting.

2 Corinthians 12:10

I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (2 Corinthians 12:10)

Three points:

1. I am content.

This is hard isn't it. The hardest for me is to wait.

2. Weakness, insults, hardships, persecutions, difficulties for Christ's sake.

These might come because we are Christians. Of course, if we're not living the way the Lord Jesus wants us to live, there won't be any of the above. If we live like the Devil, why should he bother to trouble us?

3. Weakness = strength.

It seems strange doesn't it? The examples in the Bible show this weakness to be relying on God instead of ourselves. It is not weakness in mind or purpose. Praying and waiting are blessed by God; He will answer.

Genesis 2:15-17

Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die." (Genesis 2:15-17)

Three points:

1. God is a good teacher.

Don't ya think Adam understood? Sure he did. One law. One point to teach. It was clear.

2. God provides a test.

A good teacher will test his/her pupils to see if they have learned what was taught.

3. Adam failed.

God teaches us and tests us today. He has given us the Lord Jesus Christ whose words are in the Bible. His rules. His points He wants us to learn. Then...He tests us. Will we be true to what He taught us? Or will we fall? Most in the church today have fallen. Fallen with a false gospel and a false bunch of rules. God help us!

2 Corinthians 3:6

II Corinthians. 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of the letter, but of the spirit: for the letter kills, but the spirit giveth life.

[It is He] Who has qualified us [making us to be fit and worthy and sufficient] as ministers and dispensers of a new covenant [of salvation through Christ], not [ministers] of the letter (of legally written code) but of the Spirit; for the code [of the Law] kills, but the [Holy] Spirit makes alive.(2 Corinthians 3:6)

Three points:

1. God does the making.

A person can go to school, seminary, etc but it will not make a useful tool for God. Only God can do it. Ministers can be understood as the ministry, that is, pastors and deacons, but it also can be understood to be any Christian who will serve God. God makes these servants sufficient, able, adequate to do the work he has given. No mention is made of talent, special abilities, or resources. Our needs are met by abiding in the vine, the Lord Jesus. He supplies all our needs.

2. God makes useful tools for the Gospel (the new testament), not of the law.

He used to do it for Old Testament saints, now the Old Testament has been replaced with the New Testament. The old is done away; the new is come. These tools are for preaching, defending, edifying all people--some to become Christians and for the Christians to grow.

3. God uses the Spirit, not the law to bring life.

The Law (The Ten Commandments) does not bring life; they bring conviction.

2 Peter 2:1

False prophets appeared in the past among the people, and in the same way false teachers will appear among you. They will bring in destructive, untrue doctrines, and will deny the Master who redeemed them, and so they will bring upon themselves sudden destruction. (2 Peter 2:1)

Three points:

1. The history and future of false people are the same.

The past had false prophets; now we have false teachers and false prophets. A class of so called Christians who reject the Bible as being God's Word. These false Christians bring in all sort of "Words of the Lord" and treat the Bible as secondary to their pronouncements.

2. These false prophets/teachers bring in lies and destructive teaching.

Things that will destroy people, families, churches, and nations.

3. The even deny the Lord Jesus and bring upon themselves God's punishment.

They deny by putting the Bible not as the only Word of God but a secondary word. The real word is straight from God Himself, through them, and there is no need for the Bible in this way any more. Unfortunately they will receive God's punishment for REJECTING what God has said. What are you and I doing? Do we also reject?

Psalms 60:12

With God on our side we will win; he will defeat our enemies. (Psalms 60:12)

Three points:

1. I cannot fight all my battles alone.

What kind of battles do we have? There might be financial, physical, family, emotional, or spiritual battles like temptation. Many of today's saints face persecution, famine, sickness, and abuse.

2. God is the deciding factor.

Jesus said, "Without me you can do nothing." Later the Bible states, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." God plus one is victor. Job suffered but finally delivered. So others suffered from Abel to Noah, from Moses to the Lord Jesus, but God also wins. Why the delay? I don't know. Even our Lord Jesus suffered and waited for victory.

3. God defeats the enemy.

Once the battle is over; it is time to praise God. We may be in the thick of the fight, but the Lord gives the strength to win.

Matthew 7:20

Therefore by their fruits you shall know them. (Matthew 7:20)

Three points:

1. People have fruits.

The fruits that the Lord Jesus refers to are the things we do, and even the things we think, desire, and say.

2. The fruit.

We can by our senses know what is good and bad fruit. This is obvious with potatoes; a rotten potato with really stinks; an bite into apple with a spot of brown, stinky mush is thrown out. The potato is obvious, the apple more subtle. Good fruit is But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)

3. What is our fruit?

We can test what others are, but what about ourselves. Oh, Lord may You work in us to produce good fruit.

Matthew 5:17

Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. (Matthew 5:17)

Three points:

1. What did the Lord Jesus come for?

Some living then might have thought He came to destroy the Law. Jesus came to destroy sin, death, and the devil.

2. Jesus came to fulfill.

Fulfill what? He came to fulfill the Law. Every single law written in the Old Testament the Lord Jesus fulfilled in word, thought, desire, and deed.

3. Jesus keeps His promises.

He said He came to fulfill. He fulfilled the whole of the Law and the prophets. We can trust a great leader like Him.

1 Timothy 6:7

What did we bring into the world? Nothing! What can we take out of the world? Nothing! (1 Timothy 6:7)

Three points:

1. Belongings are important.

The things we have or want to have are important. What is your bank balance? You probably know. If it was suddenly cleared out--brought down to zero--you would be shocked and dismayed; so would I.

2. These things are not important.

Can they heal sickness, bring peace to a troubled world or mind, or save a marriage or children from making bad choices? No

3. We cannot take them with us.

We will die. What then of those things we thought so important? What good will they be before God on Judgment Day? Better to be ready now; then it will be too late.

Proverbs 16:27

Evil people look for ways to harm others; even their words burn with evil. (Proverbs 16:27)

Three points:

1. Words do hurt.

It doesn't take much intelligence to know that. The question is, "What kind of words am I saying?" What is the look on our face, the tone of our voice, and the emphasis of our words? There are many ways to say, "I love you." It can be mocking, tender, meaningful, sarcastic, shouting, snarling; the same words can show love or hate.

2. Evil people

If it is evil people who are looking for ways to hurt others and their words "burn with evil", then we want OUR words not be this way. This is a day and age of hurtful words. Often they are given to the ones we say we love.

3. Words and actions are related.

What is in our hearts comes out in what we say and what we do. Let us start to speak loving words and doing loving deeds. Sometimes constructive criticism is thought of as being hurtful words, but often that very rebuke sets one on the right road.

Rebelation 3:20

Listen! I stand at the door and knock; if any hear my voice and open the door, I will come into their house and eat with them, and they will eat with me. (Revelation 3:20)

Three points:

1. Listen

Often we are listening to the wrong things. Our hearing is overwhelmed by what is around us, but what is important is to listen to the Lord Jesus. He shouts, "Hey, listen up." He wants us to pay attention to what He is saying.

2. The Lord Jesus' part

He stands at the door. He knocks. This is unconditional.
He comes in and eats. The is conditional. We must let him in.

3. If any hear my voice and open the door.

It is not so much a problem of hearing but a problem of responding. All hear; few respond.

Proverbs 18:12

No one is respected unless he is humble; arrogant people are on the way to ruin. (Proverbs 18:12)

Three points:

1. Pride is an attitude where a person thinks they are really great.

It doesn't matter what it is, but when one has an attitude like that, people know it. The look on one's face, the expression in their eyes, and their stance.

2. People generally don't appreciate someone who is proud.

That's why they look to people who are humble.

3. Arrogant people have over confidence.

They may take chances that others won't. They may come to conclusions others won't. They may be controlling, abusive, and loud. They don't like to shown their faults, their mistakes, their errors, their sins; they will retaliate to prove their supremacy, but all to no avail. They will go into ruin and rejection at some point.

Genesis 7:21-22

Every living being on the earth died---every bird, every animal, and every person. Everything on earth that breathed died. (Genesis 7:21-22)

Three points:

1. Many accuse God of killing innocent people.

They especially like to blame God for killing, murdering is their term, innocent, helpless babies.

2. They refuse to understand why people had to die.

God told Adam that if someone sins, that is, disobeys the rules, laws, that God gives, that person must die. Adam know that, but disobeyed anyway.

3. They refuse to understand that Noah preached for 120 years.

All the people had to do was step into the ark. They knew to disobey God's rules would lead to death, but they refused to obey, so they and their children died. It was the parent's fault in this situation. We don't have to make the same stupid mistake they did.

1 Peter 1:3-4

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, (1 Peter 1:3-4)

Three points:

1. The importance of the resurrection.

No resurrection of Jesus Christ, no salvation for us. The importance of Jesus' resurrection is paramount. It is one of the greatest truths despised and rejected by those who don't love the Lord Jesus.

2. An inheritance.

Incorruptible=cannot rot, be destroyed, or disappear. Undefiled=no sin there, no murder, no rape, no lies, no hate. Does not fade away=does not disappear, doesn't become old.

3. It is reserved.

No chance of getting there and finding all the rooms full.

Numbers 11:19-20

In fact, they will have meat day after day for a whole month--not just a few days, or even ten or twenty. They turned against me and wanted to return to Egypt. Now they will eat meat until they get sick of it. (Numbers 11:19-20)

Three points:

1. Have you ever prayed for something?

Sure you have. Did you expect an answer? Of course. Did you ever think that it might not be the best for you? We need to pray, "If it is your will, O Father, please grant me this request."

2. Sometimes prayer is not from the heart but from our evil desires.

If we pray, "Your will be done", instead of demanding from God, life will be much more pleasant. It does happen that when we look back, we say, "Thank you for not answering this prayer".

3. The answer to their prayer made them sick.

If this happens, let us ask for forgiveness. Let us repent and not do it again. God is gracious and merciful.

Psalms 34:18

The LORD [is] nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. (Psalms 34:18)
Another version has it: The LORD is near to those who are discouraged; he saves those who have lost all hope. (Psalms 34:18)

Three points:

1. People do become discouraged.

Discouragement from financial, social, employment, disappoints, family, health, etc. This world is under a curse because of sin.

2. People are tempted to think God is far away.

God is closer when we are discouraged. The Lord Jesus, himself, was discouraged. He knows what it is like. He will not leave. "For I am certain that nothing can separate us from his love: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, neither the world above nor the world below---there is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39)

3. When discouragement is gone, we know that God has helped us.

It is OK to turn to friends or relatives for help, but we must always turn to God first. Help may come from anywhere and when it comes, praise God.

Do not give up. God has not forsaken you. He will help you.

Habakkuk 3:17-19

Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls-- Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer's feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills. To the Chief Musician. With my stringed instruments. (Habakkuk 3:17-19)

Three points:

1. Sometimes things in life are rotten--real rotten.

In our passage food is going to be in very short supply. The trees are not blossoming, vines have no fruit, olive trees have no olives, and fields are empty. The animals are gone, too. What a time. Death will come to many. Have you ever had situation in your life that was really bad?

2. We are not to blame God.

The writer says, "Yet, I will rejoice in the Lord." What a testimony of faith! You may be tempted to curse God and walk away from Him, but we don't need to. We now show to others the fruit of our true faith in God, in His son Jesus Christ. If we have faith in this, then what a blessing to US and to others.

3. God will give us strength.

We can make it--even if we die. God will not leave us when things are hard. Because things are hard doesn't mean God has left. God is with us, and He will preserve our souls. Don't give up.

Proverbs 21:23

Whoso keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles. (Proverbs 21:23)

Another translation has it:

If you want to stay out of trouble, be careful what you say. (Proverbs 21:23)

Three points:

1. Most people like to stay out of trouble.

They don't want the boss mad at them, the employees mad at them, the neighbors mad at them, nor the sheriff, the police, their spouse, their children, or even their dog.

2. We need to careful what we say.

Nothing gets someone in trouble faster than mouthing off.

3. This is conditional.

If you want trouble, mouth off. If you don't, be careful what you say.

Psalms 103:13

As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. (Psalms 103:13)

Three points:

1. Pity

Pity has the idea of compassion, tenderness, comfort. After accidental failure in a child, we show this to our children.

2. Father

This is part of being a good father. We need to show this to, not only our children, but to all.

3. God...shows us pity, too.

Let us show pity. This is to those you fear God. Remember the next failure we face. We like to have mercy shown to us. This world has very little love and mercy. We need to stand for the truth, but in times of failure, accident, let us be ready to forgive. Let bitterness flee away.

Matthew 11:28-30

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30)

Three points:

1. People do labor and are weighed down with heavy burdens.

This burdens are not always financial, emotional, physical, it is the spiritual burden that people carry that is the heaviest. Being created in God's image and yet being carrying the burden of rebellion.

2. Jesus' yoke.

A well made yoke makes the burden easier, because the fit is correct. The pressure of the pulling is even allowing no sores. Jesus is the best carpenter. Jesus is the best master.

3. Rest for our souls.

Nothing like going to bed at night after hard work. Finally, a time to rest. The rest that the Lord Jesus gives is like no other. It is complete, perfect, and timeless.

2 Timothy 3:13

But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. (2 Timothy 3:13)

Three points:

1. Things are going to get worse

Remember that there will be difficult times in the last days. People will be selfish, greedy, boastful, and conceited; they will be insulting, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, and irreligious; they will be unkind, merciless, slanderers, violent, and fierce; they will hate the good; they will be treacherous, reckless, and swollen with pride; they will love pleasure rather than God; they will hold to the outward form of our religion, but reject its real power. Keep away from such people. (2 Timothy 3:1-5)

2. People are going to get worse.

Specifically, evil men and impostors. Evil people we will probably spot pretty easily; impostors are harder to spot. We need a standard; we have one--the Bible. The Lord Jesus has given us all that we need to know right from wrong.

3. Impostors.

The word impostor means a "pretender". Someone who pretends to be a Christian, but he/she is not. They know the lingo; they know the Bible; they know how to be "Christian", but they are not. The word also means "seducer". A seducer is someone who tries to get people to follow their way, rather than getting people to follow the way of the Lord Jesus and the way He taught.

Job 20:5

That the triumphing of the wicked is short, And the joy of the hypocrite is but for a moment? (Job 20:5)

Three points:

1. The wicked triumph.

They win...for awhile. It seems like there is no hope. The Christians lose, society loses, families lose. Things just seem hopeless.

2. This triumph is short.

While the Christians wait, time goes slowly. eventually the tide turns, the winds start blowing from another direction, and God will win again.

3. The hypocrite has a short-lived joy.

Hypocrites are those who say one thing and do another. They have joy because people don't know their real self...for awhile. Eventually these, too, are exposed for what they are, and their joy is gone. Hopefully, it is gone to shame, then repentance, then forgiveness.

James 5:8

You also be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.
(James 5:8)

Three points:

1. Be patient.

Not much is harder is it? We CAN wait. Ask God to help, pray for one another, and remind ourselves that He WILL come. It is a matter of being content.

2. Establish your hearts.

Establish has the idea of "make up your minds", thus make up your minds that you will wait for the Lord's return patiently.

3. The Lord will return.

Don't know when, but He will. It is always close to happening, so we must always be ready.

Job 42:6

Wherefore I abhor [myself], and repent in dust and ashes. (Job 42:6)

Three points:

1. We to take a good look at ourselves.

We think that all is good and right with us until we compare ourselves to God and His standards.

2. We need to be humble.

Yes, Lord, you are right and I am wrong. This is hard, isn't it?

3. We need to repent.

Repent is to change our attitude and actions. It is a work in our heart. We need to turn around and act, think, and talk as God wants. We have the Bible to tell us these things
